His brothers James and Jude were very much \n        hurt because they were not called to this conference. Up to this time \n        they had regarded themselves as belonging to Jesus&#8217; inner circle of associates. \n        But Jesus planned to have no close relatives as members of this corps \n        of apostolic directors of the kingdom. This failure to include James and \n        Jude among the chosen few, together with his apparent aloofness from his \n        mother ever since the experience at Cana, was the starting point of an \n        ever-widening gulf between Jesus and his family. This situation continued \n        throughout his public ministry&#8211;they very nearly rejected him&#8211;and these \n        differences were not fully removed until after his death and resurrection. \n        His mother constantly wavered between attitudes of fluctuating faith and \n        hope, and increasing emotions of disappointment, humiliation, and despair. \n        Only Ruth, the youngest, remained unswervingly loyal to her father-brother.<br>\n        <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1538 &#8211; &sect;2 Until after the resurrection, Jesus&#8217; \n        entire family had very little to do with his ministry. FINAL INSTRUCTIONS &#8211; P.1538<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1538 &#8211; &sect;3 The next day, Sunday, June 23, A.D. 26, \n        Jesus imparted his final instructions to the six. He directed them to \n        go forth, two and two, to teach the glad tidings of the kingdom. He forbade \n        them to baptize and advised against public preaching. He went on to explain \n        that later he would permit them to preach in public, but that for a season, \n        and for many reasons, he desired them to acquire practical experience \n        in dealing personally with their fellow men. Jesus purposed to make their \n        first tour entirely one of personal work. Although this announcement was \n        something of a disappointment to the apostles, still they saw, at least \n        in part, Jesus&#8217; reason for thus beginning the proclamation of the kingdom, \n        and they started out in good heart and with confident enthusiasm. John spoke up, asking: &quot;But, \n      Master, will these six men come into our midst and share all <br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;0 things equally with us who have been \n        with you since the Jordan and have heard all your teaching in preparation \n        for this, our first labor for the kingdom?&quot; And Jesus replied: &quot;Yes, \n        John, the men you choose shall become one with us, and you will teach \n        them all that pertains to the kingdom, even as I have taught you.&quot; \n        After thus speaking, Jesus left them.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>project, \uacc4\ud68d\ud558\ub2e4<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;1 The six did not separate to go to their \n        work until they had exchanged many words in discussion of Jesus&#8217; instruction \n        that each of them should choose a new apostle. Andrew&#8217;s counsel finally \n        prevailed, and they went forth to their labors. In substance Andrew said: \n        &quot;The Master is right; we are too few to encompass this work. There \n        is need for more teachers, and the Master has manifested great confidence \n        in us inasmuch as he has intrusted us with the choosing of these six new \n        apostles.&quot; This morning, as they separated to go to their work, there \n        was a bit of concealed depression in each heart. Meantime Jesus went over to Nazareth to visit \n        with Joseph and Simon and other members of his family living in that vicinity. \n        Jesus did everything humanly possible, consistent with his dedication \n        to the doing of his Father&#8217;s will, to retain the confidence and affection \n        of his family. CHOOSING THE SIX &#8211; P.1539<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;4 This first missionary tour of the six \n        was eminently successful. They all discovered the great value of direct \n        and personal contact with men. They returned to Jesus more fully realizing \n        that, after all, religion is purely and wholly a matter of personal experience. \n        They began to sense how hungry were the common people to hear words of \n        religious comfort and spiritual good cheer. When they assembled about \n        Jesus, they all wanted to talk at once, but Andrew assumed charge, and \n        as he called upon them one by one, they made their formal reports to the \n        Master and presented their nominations for the six new apostles.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><p>\uc885\uad50\ub294 \uac1c\uc778\uc801 \uccb4\ud5d8\uc758 \ubb38\uc81c<\/p>\n    <p>one by one, \ud55c \uc0ac\ub78c\uc529<\/p>\n    <p>nominate &lt; nomen (name), \uc9c0\uba85\ud558\ub2e4<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;5 Jesus, after each man had presented his \n        selection for the new apostleships, asked all the others to vote upon \n        the nomination; thus all six of the new apostles were formally accepted \n        by all of the older six. Then Jesus announced that they would all visit \n        these candidates and give them the call to service.<br>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n    <td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;6 The newly selected apostles were:<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;7 1. Matthew Levi, the customs collector \n        of Capernaum, who had his office just to the east of the city, near the \n        borders of Batanea. He was selected by Andrew.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;8 2. Thomas Didymus, a fisherman of Tarichea \n        and onetime carpenter and stone mason of Gadara. He was selected by Philip.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;9 3. James Alpheus, a fisherman and farmer \n    of Kheresa, was selected by James Zebedee.<\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><p>customs, \uc218\uc785 \uad00\uc138 <\/p>\n    <p>vicesima = 1\/20<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr> \n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1539 &#8211; &sect;10 4. Judas Alpheus, the twin brother of \n        James Alpheus, also a fisherman, was selected by John Zebedee.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;1 5. Simon Zelotes was a high officer in \n        the patriotic organization of the Zealots, a position which he gave up \n        to join Jesus&#8217; apostles. Before joining the Zealots, Simon had been a \n        merchant. He was selected by Peter.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;2 6. Judas Iscariot was an only son of \n        wealthy Jewish parents living in Jericho. He had become attached to John \n        the Baptist, and his Sadducee parents had disowned him. He was looking \n        for employment in these regions when Jesus&#8217; apostles found him, and chiefly \n        because of his experience with finances, Nathaniel invited him to join \n        their ranks. Judas Iscariot was the only Judean among the twelve apostles.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;3 Jesus spent a full day with the six, \n        answering their questions and listening to the details of their reports, \n        for they had many interesting and profitable experiences to relate. THE CALL OF MATTHEW AND SIMON &#8211; P.1540<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;4 The next day Jesus and the six went to \n        call upon Matthew, the customs collector. Matthew was awaiting them, having \n        balanced his books and made ready to turn the affairs of his office over \n        to his brother. And Jesus nodded his consent. When Peter led Jesus up to Simon, the Master greeted the fiery \n      patriot and only said, &quot;Follow me.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n    <p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;7 They all returned to Matthew&#8217;s home, \n        where they talked much about politics and religion until the hour of the \n        evening meal. The Levi family had long been engaged in business and tax \n        gathering; therefore many of the guests bidden to this banquet by Matthew \n        would have been denominated &quot;publicans and sinners&quot; by the Pharisees.<br>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n    <td><p>denominate &lt; de (formally) + nominare (name), \uc77c\uceeb\ub2e4<\/p>\n    <p>publican &lt; publicum (revenue), \uc9d5\uc138\uc6d0, \uc138\ub9ac<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;8 In those days, when a reception-banquet \n        of this sort was tendered a prominent individual, it was the custom for \n        all interested persons to linger about the banquet room to observe the \n        guests at meat and to listen to the conversation and speeches of the men \n        of honor. Accordingly, most of the Capernaum Pharisees were present on \n        this occasion to observe Jesus&#8217; conduct at this unusual social gathering.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td> <p>in those days, \uadf8 \uc2dc\uc808\uc5d0<\/p>\n    <p>prominent, \ud0c1\uc6d4\ud55c<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1540 &#8211; &sect;9 As the dinner progressed, the joy of \n      the diners mounted to heights of good cheer, and everybody was having \n      such a splendid time that the onlooking Pharisees began, in their hearts, \n      to criticize Jesus for his participation in such a lighthearted and carefree \n      affair. Later in the evening, when they were making speeches, one of the \n      more malignant of the Pharisees went so far as to criticize <br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1541 &#8211; &sect;0 Jesus&#8217; conduct to Peter, saying: &quot;How \n        dare you to teach that this man is righteous when he eats with publicans \n        and sinners and thus lends his presence to such scenes of careless pleasure \n        making.&quot; Peter whispered this criticism to Jesus before he spoke \n    the parting blessing upon those assembled. <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><p>progress, \uc9c4\ud589\ud558\ub2e4<\/p>\n    <p>splendid &lt; splendere (bright), \ubc18\uc9dd\uc774\ub294, \ube5b\ub098\ub294<\/p>\n    <p>carefree, \uac71\uc815 \uc5c6\ub294, \ud640\uac00\ubd84\ud55c<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">When Jesus began to speak, \n        he said: &quot;In coming here tonight to welcome Matthew and Simon to \n        our fellowship, I am glad to witness your lightheartedness and social \n        good cheer, but you should rejoice still more because many of you will \n        find entrance into the coming kingdom of the spirit, wherein you shall \n        more abundantly enjoy the good things of the kingdom of heaven. And to \n        you who stand about criticizing me in your hearts because I have come \n        here to make merry with these friends, let me say that I have come to \n        proclaim joy to the socially downtrodden and spiritual liberty to the \n        moral captives. Need I remind you that they who are whole need not a physician, \n        but rather those who are sick? I have come, not to call the righteous, \n        but sinners.&quot;<br>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n    <td><p>downtrodden, \uc9d3\ubc1f\ud78c<\/p>\n    <p>captive, \ud3ec\ub85c<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">P.1541 &#8211; &sect;1 And truly this was a strange sight in \n        all Jewry: to see a man of righteous character and noble sentiments mingling \n        freely and joyously with the common people, even with an irreligious and \n        pleasure-seeking throng of publicans and reputed sinners. Simon Zelotes \n        desired to make a speech at this gathering in Matthew&#8217;s house, but Andrew, \n        knowing that Jesus did not want the coming kingdom to become confused \n        with the Zealots&#8217; movement, prevailed upon him to refrain from making \n        any public remarks.<br>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n    <td>Zelotes (Greek spelling? of zealot) <\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1541 &#8211; &sect;2 Jesus and the apostles remained that \n        night in Matthew&#8217;s house, and as the people went to their homes, they \n        spoke of but one thing: the goodness and friendliness of Jesus.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">4. THE CALL OF THE TWINS &#8211; P.1541<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1541 &#8211; &sect;3 On the morrow all nine of them went by \n        boat over to Kheresa to execute the formal calling of the next two apostles, \n        James and Judas the twin sons of Alpheus, the nominees of James and John \n        Zebedee. The fisherman twins were expecting Jesus and his apostles and \n        were therefore awaiting them on the shore. James Zebedee presented the \n        Master to the Kheresa fishermen, and Jesus, gazing on them, nodded and \n    said, &quot;Follow me.&quot;<\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>nominee, \uc9c0\uba85\ubc1b\uc740 \uc790<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1541 &#8211; &sect;4 That afternoon, which they spent together, \n      Jesus fully instructed them concerning attendance upon festive gatherings, \n      concluding his remarks by saying: &quot;All men are my brothers. My Father \n      in heaven does not despise any creature of our making. The kingdom of \n      heaven is open to all men and women. No man may close the door of mercy \n      in the face of any hungry soul who may seek to gain an entrance thereto. \n      We will sit at meat with all who desire to hear of the kingdom. As our \n      Father in heaven looks down upon men, they are all alike. Refuse not therefore \n      to break bread with Pharisee or sinner, Sadducee or publican, Roman or \n      Jew, rich or poor, free or bond. They found it very easy \n        to love and admire Jesus but very difficult to understand many of his \n        teachings.<br>\n      <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">&nbsp;<\/font> import, \uc911\uc694\uc131<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr> \n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1542 &#8211; &sect;1 After a night of rest the entire party, \n        now numbering eleven, went by boat over to Tarichea.<br>\n        <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">5. THE CALL OF THOMAS AND JUDAS &#8211; P.1542<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1542 &#8211; &sect;2 Thomas the fisherman and Judas the wanderer \n        met Jesus and the apostles at the fisher-boat landing at Tarichea, and \n        Thomas led the party to his near-by home. Philip now presented Thomas \n        as his nominee for apostleship and Nathaniel presented Judas Iscariot, \n        the Judean, for similar honors. Jesus looked upon Thomas and said: &quot;Thomas, \n        you lack faith; nevertheless, I receive you. Follow me.&quot; To Judas \n        Iscariot the Master said: &quot;Judas, we are all of one flesh, and as \n        I receive you into our midst, I pray that you will always be loyal to \n    your Galilean brethren. Follow me.&quot;<\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><font size=\"5\">P.1542 &#8211; &sect;3 When they had refreshed themselves, Jesus \n        took the twelve apart for a season to pray with them and to instruct them \n        in the nature and work of the Holy Spirit, but again did they largely \n        fail to comprehend the meaning of those wonderful truths which he endeavored \n        to teach them. One would grasp one point and one would comprehend another, \n        but none of them could encompass the whole of his teaching. Always would \n        they make the mistake of trying to fit Jesus&#8217; new gospel into their old \n        forms of religious belief. They could not grasp the idea that Jesus had \n        come to proclaim a new gospel of salvation and to establish a new way \n        of finding God; they did not perceive that he was a new revelation of \n        the Father in heaven.<br>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n    <td>refresh, \uae30\uc6b4\uc744 \ub2e4\uc2dc \ucc28\ub9ac\ub2e4<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1542 &#8211; &sect;4 The next day Jesus left his twelve apostles \n      quite alone; he wanted them to become acquainted and desired that they \n      be alone to talk over what he had taught them. Taking Jesus aside, Peter made bold to say: \n        &quot;Master, we come at the behest of our associates to inquire whether \n        the time is not now ripe to enter into the kingdom. And will you proclaim \n        the kingdom at Capernaum, or are we to move on to Jerusalem? And when \n        shall we learn, each of us, the positions we are to occupy with you in \n        the establishment of the kingdom&#8211;&quot; and Peter would have gone on \n        asking further questions, but Jesus raised an admonitory hand and stopped \n        him. And beckoning the other apostles standing near by to join them, Jesus \n        said: &quot;My little children, how long shall I bear with you! FIVE MONTHS OF TESTING &#8211; P.1546<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1546 &#8211; &sect;3 This somewhat monotonous period of alternate \n        fishing and personal work proved to be a grueling experience for the twelve \n        apostles, but they endured the test. With all of their grumblings, doubts, \n        and transient dissatisfactions they remained true to their vows of devotion \n        and loyalty to the Master. It was their personal association with Jesus \n        during these months of testing that so endeared him to them that they \n        all (save Judas Iscariot) remained loyal and true to him even in the dark \n      hours of the trial and crucifixion. <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">Real men simply could not actually \n        desert a revered teacher who had lived so close to them and had been so \n        devoted to them as had Jesus. Through the dark hours of the Master&#8217;s death, \n        in the hearts of these apostles all reason, judgment, and logic were set \n        aside in deference to just one extraordinary human emotion&#8211;the supreme \n        sentiment of friendship-loyalty. These five months of work with Jesus \n        led these apostles, each one of them, to regard him as the best friend \n        he had in all the world. And it was this human sentiment, and not his \n        superb teachings or marvelous doings, that held them together until after \n        the resurrection and the renewal of the proclamation of the gospel of \n        the kingdom.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><p>monotonous &lt; G: mono + tone<\/p>\n    <p>gruelling &lt; F: gruel (coarse meal), \uac70\uce5c<\/p>\n    <p>set aside, \uc606\uc5d0 \ub193\ub2e4<\/p>\n    <p>in deference, \uc874\uacbd\uc2ec\uc5d0\uc11c, \uc874\uc911\ud558\uc5ec<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1546 &#8211; &sect;4 Not only were these months of quiet work \n      a great test to the apostles, a test which they survived, but this season \n      of public inactivity was a great trial to Jesus&#8217; family. By the time Jesus \n      was prepared to launch forth on his public work, his entire family (except \n      Ruth) had practically deserted him. On only a few occasions did they attempt \n      to make subsequent contact with him, and then it was to persuade him to \n      return home with them, for they came near to believing that he was beside \n      himself. They simply could not fathom his philosophy nor grasp his teaching; \n      it was all too much for those of his own flesh and blood.<\/font><\/p>\n    <p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>beside onself, \ubbf8\uce58\ub2e4<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1546 &#8211; &sect;5 The apostles carried on their personal \n        work in Capernaum, Bethsaida-Julias, Chorazin, Gerasa, Hippos, Magdala, \n        Cana, Bethlehem of Galilee, Jotapata, Ramah, Safed, Gischala, Gadara, \n        and Abila. Besides these towns they labored in many villages as well as \n        in the countryside. By the end of this period the twelve had worked out \n        fairly satisfactory plans for the care of their respective families. Most \n        of the apostles were married, some had several children, but they had \n        made such arrangements for the support of their home folks that, with \n        some little assistance from the apostolic funds, they could devote their \n        entire energies to the <br>\n      <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;0 Master&#8217;s work without having to worry \n        about the financial welfare of their families.<br>\n    <\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>carry on, \uacc4\uc18d \uc218\ud589\ud558\ub2e4<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">10. ORGANIZATION OF THE TWELVE &#8211; P.1547<br>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;1 The apostles early organized themselves \n        in the following manner:<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;2 1. Andrew, the first chosen apostle, \n        was designated chairman and director general of the twelve.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;3 2. Peter, James, and John were appointed \n        personal companions of Jesus. Philip was made steward of the group. \n        It was his duty to provide food and to see that visitors, and even the \n        multitude of listeners at times, had something to eat.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;5 4. Nathaniel watched over the needs of \n        the families of the twelve. He received regular reports as to the requirements \n        of each apostle&#8217;s family and, making requisition on Judas, the treasurer, \n        would send funds each week to those in need.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p>\n    <p><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>steward. \uc9d1\uc0ac<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;6 5. Matthew was the fiscal agent of the \n      apostolic corps. It was his duty to see that the budget was balanced, \n      the treasury replenished. If the funds for mutual support were not forthcoming, \n      if donations sufficient to maintain the party were not received, Matthew \n      was empowered to order the twelve back to their nets for a season. But \n      this was never necessary after they began their public work; he always \n      had sufficient funds in the treasurer&#8217;s hands to finance their activities.<\/font><\/p>\n    <p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td><p>fiscal &lt; fiscus (state treasury, money bag made of twigs), <\/p>\n    <p>\ud68c\uacc4\uc758<\/p><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr>\n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;7 6. Thomas was manager of the itinerary. \n      It devolved upon him to arrange lodgings and in a general way select places \n      for teaching and preaching, thereby insuring a smooth and expeditious \n      travel schedule.<\/font><\/p>\n      <p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;8 7. James and Judas the twin sons of Alpheus \n        were assigned to the management of the multitudes. Judas Iscariot was appointed treasurer. \n        He carried the bag. He paid all expenses and kept the books. He made budget \n        estimates for Matthew from week to week and also made weekly reports to \n        Andrew. Judas paid out funds on Andrew&#8217;s authorization.<\/font><\/p>\n    <p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p><\/td>\n    <td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n  <tr> \n    <td><p><font size=\"5\">P.1547 &#8211; &sect;11 In this way the twelve functioned from \n        their early organization up to the time of the reorganization made necessary \n        by the desertion of Judas, the betrayer. The Master and his disciple-apostles \n        went on in this simple manner until Sunday, January 12, A.D. 27, when \n        he called them together and formally ordained them as ambassadors of the \n        kingdom and preachers of its glad tidings.
