As usual, they<br \/>\nmade their headquarters at the home of Zebedee in Bethsaida. Now that<br \/>\nJohn the Baptist had been sent to his death, Jesus prepared to launch<br \/>\nout in the first open and public preaching tour of Galilee. The news that<br \/>\nJesus had returned rapidly spread throughout the city, and early the next<br \/>\nday, Mary the mother of Jesus hastened away, going over to Nazareth to<br \/>\nvisit her son Joseph.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1628 &#8211; \u00a72 Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Jesus<br \/>\nspent at the Zebedee house instructing his apostles preparatory to their<br \/>\nfirst extensive public preaching tour. He also received and taught many<br \/>\nearnest inquirers, both singly and in groups. Through Andrew, he arranged<br \/>\nto speak in the synagogue on the coming Sabbath day.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>singly, \ud558\ub098\uc529 \ub530\ub85c<\/p>\n<p>in groups, \uc9d1\ub2e8\uc73c\ub85c<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"55%\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1628 &#8211; \u00a73 Late on Friday evening Jesus&#8217; baby sister,<br \/>\nRuth, secretly paid him a visit. They spent almost an hour together in<br \/>\na boat anchored a short distance from the shore. No human being, save<br \/>\nJohn Zebedee, ever knew of this visit, and he was admonished to tell no<br \/>\nman. Ruth was the only member of Jesus&#8217; family who consistently and unwaveringly<br \/>\nbelieved in the divinity of his earth mission from the times of her earliest<br \/>\nspiritual consciousness right on down through his eventful ministry, death,<br \/>\nresurrection, and ascension; and she finally passed on to the worlds beyond<br \/>\nnever having doubted the supernatural character of her father-brother&#8217;s<br \/>\nmission in the flesh. THE DRAUGHT OF FISHES &#8211; P.1628<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1628 &#8211; \u00a74 On Friday morning of this same week,<br \/>\nwhen Jesus was teaching by the seaside, the people crowded him so near<br \/>\nthe water&#8217;s edge that he signaled to some fishermen occupying a near-by<br \/>\nboat to come to his rescue. Entering the boat, he continued to teach the<br \/>\nassembled multitude for more than two hours. This boat was named &#8220;Simon&#8221;;<br \/>\nit was the former fishing vessel of Simon Peter and had been built by<br \/>\nJesus&#8217; own hands. On this particular morning the boat was being used by<br \/>\nDavid Zebedee and two associates, who had just come in near shore from<br \/>\na fruitless night of fishing on the lake. They were cleaning and mending<br \/>\ntheir nets when Jesus requested them to come to his assistance.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>draft = \ub04c\uc5b4\uc62c\ub9ac\uae30, \ub2f9\uae30\uae30<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1628 &#8211; \u00a75 After Jesus had finished teaching the<br \/>\npeople, he said to David: &#8220;As you were delayed by coming to my help,<br \/>\nnow let me work with you. Let us go fishing; put out into yonder deep<br \/>\nand let down your nets for a draught.&#8221; But Simon, one of David&#8217;s<br \/>\nassistants, answered: &#8220;Master, it is useless. We toiled all night<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1629 &#8211; \u00a70 and took nothing; however, at your bidding<br \/>\nwe will put out and let down the nets.&#8221; And Simon consented to follow<br \/>\nJesus&#8217; directions because of a gesture made by his master, David. When<br \/>\nthey had proceeded to the place designated by Jesus, they let down their<br \/>\nnets and enclosed such a multitude of fish that they feared the nets would<br \/>\nbreak, so much so that they signaled to their associates on the shore<br \/>\nto come to their assistance. Jesus was a close student of nature; he was an experienced<br \/>\nfisherman and knew the habits of the fish in the Sea of Galilee. On this<br \/>\noccasion he merely directed these men to the place where the fish were<br \/>\nusually to be found at this time of day. But Jesus&#8217; followers always regarded<br \/>\nthis as a miracle.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">2. AFTERNOON AT THE SYNAGOGUE &#8211; P.1629<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1629 &#8211; \u00a72 The next Sabbath, at the afternoon service<br \/>\nin the synagogue, Jesus preached his sermon on &#8220;The Will of the Father<br \/>\nin Heaven.&#8221; In the morning Simon Peter had preached on &#8220;The<br \/>\nKingdom.&#8221; At the Thursday evening meeting of the synagogue Andrew<br \/>\nhad taught, his subject being &#8220;The New Way.&#8221; At this particular<br \/>\ntime more people believed in Jesus in Capernaum than in any other one<br \/>\ncity on earth.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>synagogue: G (sunagoge ) meeting, \ud68c\ub2f9<\/p>\n<p>\uacfc\uac70 \uc644\ub8cc\ud615<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1629 &#8211; \u00a73 As Jesus taught in the synagogue this<br \/>\nSabbath afternoon, according to custom he took the first text from the<br \/>\nlaw, reading from the Book of Exodus: &#8220;And you shall serve the Lord,<br \/>\nyour God, and he shall bless your bread and your water, and all sickness<br \/>\nshall be taken away from you.&#8221; He chose the second text from the<br \/>\nProphets, reading from Isaiah: &#8220;Arise and shine, for your light has<br \/>\ncome, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Darkness may cover<br \/>\nthe earth and gross darkness the people, but the spirit of the Lord shall<br \/>\narise upon you, and the divine glory shall be seen with you. Even the<br \/>\ngentiles shall come to this light, and many great minds shall surrender<br \/>\nto the brightness of this light.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1629 &#8211; \u00a74 This sermon was an effort on Jesus&#8217; part<br \/>\nto make clear the fact that religion is a personal experience. Among other<br \/>\nthings, the Master said:<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1629 &#8211; \u00a75 &#8220;You well know that, while a kindhearted<br \/>\nfather loves his family as a whole, he so regards them as a group because<br \/>\nof his strong affection for each individual member of that family. No<br \/>\nlonger must you approach the Father in heaven as a child of Israel but<br \/>\nas a child of God. As a group, you are indeed the children of Israel,<br \/>\nbut as individuals, each one of you is a child of God. I have come, not<br \/>\nto reveal the Father to the children of Israel, but rather to bring this<br \/>\nknowledge of God and the revelation of his love and mercy to the individual<br \/>\nbeliever as a genuine personal experience. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">The prophets have all taught<br \/>\nyou that Yahweh cares for his people, that God loves Israel. But I have<br \/>\ncome among you to proclaim a greater truth, one which many of the later<br \/>\nprophets also grasped, that God loves you&#8211;every one of you&#8211;as individuals.<br \/>\nAll these generations have you had a national or racial religion; now<br \/>\nhave I come to give you a personal religion.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a71 &#8220;But even this is not a new idea.<br \/>\nMany of the spiritually minded among you have known this truth, inasmuch<br \/>\nas some of the prophets have so instructed you. Have you not read in the<br \/>\nScriptures where the Prophet Jeremiah says: `In those days they shall<br \/>\nno more say, the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children&#8217;s teeth<br \/>\nare set on edge. Every man shall die for his own iniquity; every man who<br \/>\neats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge. Behold, the days shall<br \/>\ncome when I will make a new covenant with my people, not according to<br \/>\nthe covenant which I made with their fathers when I brought them out of<br \/>\nthe land of Egypt, but according to the new way. I will even write my<br \/>\nlaw in their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be my people.<br \/>\nIn that day they shall not say, one man to his neighbor, do you know the<br \/>\nLord? Nay! For they shall all know me personally, from the least to the<br \/>\ngreatest.&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>inasmuch as, ~ \uc774\ubbc0\ub85c (\u6587\u8a9e)<\/p>\n<p>teeth are set on edge, \uc774\uac00 \uc2dc\ub9ac\ub2e4<\/p>\n<p>set one&#8217;s teeth on edge, \uc5f4\uc774 \ub098\uac8c \ub9cc\ub4e0\ub2e4.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a72 &#8220;Have you not read these promises?<br \/>\nDo you not believe the Scriptures? Do you not understand that the prophet&#8217;s<br \/>\nwords are fulfilled in what you behold this very day? And did not Jeremiah<br \/>\nexhort you to make religion an affair of the heart, to relate yourselves<br \/>\nto God as individuals? Did not the prophet tell you that the God of heaven<br \/>\nwould search your individual hearts? And were you not warned that the<br \/>\nnatural human heart is deceitful above all things and oftentimes desperately<br \/>\nwicked?<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a73 &#8220;Have you not read also where Ezekiel<br \/>\ntaught even your fathers that religion must become a reality in your individual<br \/>\nexperiences? No more shall you use the proverb which says, `The fathers<br \/>\nhave eaten sour grapes and the children&#8217;s teeth are set on edge.&#8217; `As<br \/>\nI live,&#8217; says the Lord God, `behold all souls are mine; as the soul of<br \/>\nthe father, so also the soul of the son. Only the soul that sins shall<br \/>\ndie.&#8217; And then Ezekiel foresaw even this day when he spoke in behalf of<br \/>\nGod, saying: `A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will<br \/>\nI put within you.&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>in behalf of, ~\ub97c \ub300\ud45c\ud558\uc5ec<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a74 &#8220;No more should you fear that God<br \/>\nwill punish a nation for the sin of an individual; neither will the Father<br \/>\nin heaven punish one of his believing children for the sins of a nation,<br \/>\nalbeit the individual member of any family must often suffer the material<br \/>\nconsequences of family mistakes and group transgressions. Do you not realize<br \/>\nthat the hope of a better nation&#8211;or a better world&#8211;is bound up in the<br \/>\nprogress and enlightenment of the individual?&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>consequence, \uacb0\uacfc<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a75 Then the Master portrayed that the Father<br \/>\nin heaven, after man discerns this spiritual freedom, wills that his children<br \/>\non earth should begin that eternal ascent of the Paradise career which<br \/>\nconsists in the creature&#8217;s conscious response to the divine urge of the<br \/>\nindwelling spirit to find the Creator, to know God and to seek to become<br \/>\nlike him.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a76 The apostles were greatly helped by this<br \/>\nsermon. All of them realized more fully that the gospel of the kingdom<br \/>\nis a message directed to the individual, not to the nation.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a77 Even though the people of Capernaum were<br \/>\nfamiliar with Jesus&#8217; teaching, they were astonished at his sermon on this<br \/>\nSabbath day. He taught, indeed, as one having authority and not as the<br \/>\nscribes.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1630 &#8211; \u00a78 Just as Jesus finished speaking, a young<br \/>\nman in the congregation who had been much agitated by his words was seized<br \/>\nwith a violent epileptic attack and loudly cried out. At the end of the<br \/>\nseizure, when recovering consciousness, he spoke in a dreamy state, saying:<br \/>\n&#8220;What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? You are the holy<br \/>\none of God; have you come to destroy us?&#8221; Jesus<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a70 bade the people be quiet and, taking<br \/>\nthe young man by the hand, said, &#8220;Come out of it&#8221;&#8211;and he was<br \/>\nimmediately awakened.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>agitate &lt; agitare (drive), \uc120\ub3d9\ud558\ub2e4<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a71 This young man was not possessed of an<br \/>\nunclean spirit or demon; he was a victim of ordinary epilepsy. But he<br \/>\nhad been taught that his affliction was due to possession by an evil spirit.<br \/>\nHe believed this teaching and behaved accordingly in all that he thought<br \/>\nor said concerning his ailment. The people all believed that such phenomena<br \/>\nwere directly caused by the presence of unclean spirits. Accordingly they<br \/>\nbelieved that Jesus had cast a demon out of this man. But Jesus did not<br \/>\nat that time cure his epilepsy. Not until later on that day, after sundown,<br \/>\nwas this man really healed. Long after the day of Pentecost the Apostle<br \/>\nJohn, who was the last to write of Jesus&#8217; doings, avoided all reference<br \/>\nto these so-called acts of &#8220;casting out devils,&#8221; and this he<br \/>\ndid in view of the fact that such cases of demon possession never occurred<br \/>\nafter Pentecost.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>due to, ~ \ub54c\ubb38\uc774\ub2e4<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a72 As a result of this commonplace incident<br \/>\nthe report was rapidly spread through Capernaum that Jesus had cast a<br \/>\ndemon out of a man and miraculously healed him in the synagogue at the<br \/>\nconclusion of his afternoon sermon. The Sabbath was just the time for<br \/>\nthe rapid and effective spreading of such a startling rumor. This report<br \/>\nwas also carried to all the smaller settlements around Capernaum, and<br \/>\nmany of the people believed it.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a73 The cooking and the housework at the<br \/>\nlarge Zebedee home, where Jesus and the twelve made their headquarters,<br \/>\nwas for the most part done by Simon Peter&#8217;s wife and her mother. Peter&#8217;s<br \/>\nhome was near that of Zebedee; and Jesus and his friends stopped there<br \/>\non the way from the synagogue because Peter&#8217;s wife&#8217;s mother had for several<br \/>\ndays been sick with chills and fever. Now it chanced that, at about the<br \/>\ntime Jesus stood over this sick woman, holding her hand, smoothing her<br \/>\nbrow, and speaking words of comfort and encouragement, the fever left<br \/>\nher. Jesus had not yet had time to explain to his apostles that no miracle<br \/>\nhad been wrought at the synagogue; and with this incident so fresh and<br \/>\nvivid in their minds, and recalling the water and the wine at Cana, they<br \/>\nseized upon this coincidence as another miracle, and some of them rushed<br \/>\nout to spread the news abroad throughout the city.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>wrought = worked<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a74 Amatha, Peter&#8217;s mother-in-law, was suffering<br \/>\nfrom malarial fever. She was not miraculously healed by Jesus at this<br \/>\ntime. Not until several hours later, after sundown, was her cure effected<br \/>\nin connection with the extraordinary event which occurred in the front<br \/>\nyard of the Zebedee home.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\"><br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a75 And these cases are typical of the manner<br \/>\nin which a wonder-seeking generation and a miracle-minded people unfailingly<br \/>\nseized upon all such coincidences as the pretext for proclaiming that<br \/>\nanother miracle had been wrought by Jesus.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td><font size=\"5\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">3. THE HEALING AT SUNDOWN &#8211; P.1631<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1631 &#8211; \u00a76 By the time Jesus and his apostles had<br \/>\nmade ready to partake of their evening meal near the end of this eventful<br \/>\nSabbath day, all Capernaum and its environs were agog over these reputed<br \/>\nmiracles of healing; and all who were sick or afflicted began preparations<br \/>\nto go to Jesus or to have themselves carried there by their friends just<br \/>\nas soon as the sun went down. According to Jewish teaching it was not<br \/>\npermissible even to go in quest of health during the sacred hours of the<br \/>\nSabbath.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>agog (OF) = in +fun, \uc2dc\ub04c\ubc85\uc801<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1632 &#8211; \u00a71 Therefore, as soon as the sun sank beneath<br \/>\nthe horizon, scores of afflicted men, women, and children began to make<br \/>\ntheir way toward the Zebedee home in Bethsaida. One man started out with<br \/>\nhis paralyzed daughter just as soon as the sun sank behind his neighbor&#8217;s<br \/>\nhouse.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1632 &#8211; \u00a72 The whole day&#8217;s events had set the stage<br \/>\nfor this extraordinary sundown scene. Even the text Jesus had used for<br \/>\nhis afternoon sermon had intimated that sickness should be banished; and<br \/>\nhe had spoken with such unprecedented power and authority! His message<br \/>\nwas so compelling! While he made no appeal to human authority, he did<br \/>\nspeak directly to the consciences and souls of men. Though he did not<br \/>\nresort to logic, legal quibbles, or clever sayings, he did make a powerful,<br \/>\ndirect, clear, and personal appeal to the hearts of his hearers.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/td>\n<td>set the stage, \ubb34\ub300\ub97c \ub9cc\ub4e4\ub2e4<\/p>\n<p>intimate, \uc554\uc2dc\ud558\ub2e4<\/p>\n<p>quibble, \uada4\ubcc0, \ud2b8\uc9d1, (\uc0ac\uc18c\ud55c) \ubc18\ub300 \uc758\uacac<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1632 &#8211; \u00a73 That Sabbath was a great day in the earth<br \/>\nlife of Jesus, yes, in the life of a universe. To all local universe intents<br \/>\nand purposes the little Jewish city of Capernaum was the real capital<br \/>\nof Nebadon. The handful of Jews in the Capernaum synagogue were not the<br \/>\nonly beings to hear that momentous closing statement of Jesus&#8217; sermon:<br \/>\n&#8220;Hate is the shadow of fear; revenge the mask of cowardice.&#8221;<br \/>\nNeither could his hearers forget his blessed words, declaring, &#8220;Man<br \/>\nis the son of God, not a child of the devil.&#8221;<\/font><\/td>\n<td>coward, \uac81\uc7c1\uc774<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1632 &#8211; \u00a74 Soon after the setting of the sun, as<br \/>\nJesus and the apostles still lingered about the supper table, Peter&#8217;s<br \/>\nwife heard voices in the front yard and, on going to the door, saw a large<br \/>\ncompany of sick folks assembling, and that the road from Capernaum was<br \/>\ncrowded by those who were on their way to seek healing at Jesus&#8217; hands.<br \/>\nOn seeing this sight, she went at once and informed her husband, who told<br \/>\nJesus.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1632 &#8211; \u00a75 When the Master stepped out of the front<br \/>\nentrance of Zebedee&#8217;s house, his eyes met an array of stricken and afflicted<br \/>\nhumanity.
