He ate no breakfast and but little at noontide. All<br \/>\n        of Sabbath morning and the evening before, the twelve and their associates<br \/>\n        were gathered together in small groups about the house, in the garden,<br \/>\n        and along the seashore. There was a tension of uncertainty and a suspense<br \/>\n        of apprehension resting upon all of them. Even Simon Peter was depressed, if<br \/>\n        not downcast. Andrew was at a loss to know what to do for his dejected<br \/>\n        associates. Nathaniel said they were in the midst of the &quot;lull before<br \/>\n        the storm.&quot; Thomas expressed the opinion that &quot;something out<br \/>\n        of the ordinary is about to happen.&quot; Philip advised David Zebedee<br \/>\n        to &quot;forget about plans for feeding and lodging the multitude until<br \/>\n        we know what the Master is thinking about.&quot; Matthew was putting forth<br \/>\n        renewed efforts to replenish the treasury. James and John talked over<br \/>\n        the forthcoming sermon in the synagogue and speculated much as to its<br \/>\n        probable nature and scope. Simon Zelotes expressed the belief, in reality<br \/>\n        a hope, that &quot;the Father in heaven may be about to intervene in some<br \/>\n        unexpected manner for the vindication and support of his Son,&quot; while<br \/>\n        Judas Iscariot dared to indulge the thought that possibly Jesus was oppressed<br \/>\n        with regrets that &quot;he did not have the courage and daring to permit<br \/>\n        the five thousand to proclaim him king of the Jews.&quot;<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p>preoccupy, \ubab0\ub450\ud558\ub2e4<\/p>\n<p>lull, \uc18c\uac15 \uc0c1\ud0dc<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"52%\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1707 &#8211; &sect;3 It was from among such a group of depressed<br \/>\n        and disconsolate followers that Jesus went forth on this beautiful Sabbath<br \/>\n        afternoon to preach his epoch-making sermon in the Capernaum synagogue.<br \/>\n        The only word of cheerful greeting or well-wishing from any of his immediate<br \/>\n        followers came from one of the unsuspecting Alpheus twins, who, as Jesus<br \/>\n        left the house on his way to the synagogue, saluted him cheerily and said:<br \/>\n        &quot;We pray the Father will help you, and that we may have bigger multitudes<br \/>\n        than ever.&quot;<br \/>\n        <\/font><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"48%\"><font size=\"5\">&nbsp;<\/font><a href=\"images\/b\/bed012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/b\/bed012.gif\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><font size=\"5\">1. THE SETTING OF THE STAGE &#8211; P.1707<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1707 &#8211; &sect;4 A distinguished congregation greeted<br \/>\n        Jesus at three o&#8217;clock on this exquisite Sabbath afternoon in the new<br \/>\n        Capernaum synagogue. Jairus presided and handed Jesus the Scriptures to<br \/>\n        read. The day before, fifty-three Pharisees and Sadducees had arrived<br \/>\n        from Jerusalem; more than thirty of the leaders and rulers of the neighboring<br \/>\n        synagogues were also present. These Jewish religious leaders were acting<br \/>\n        directly under orders from the Sanhedrin at Jerusalem, and they constituted<br \/>\n        the orthodox vanguard which had come to inaugurate <br \/>\n      <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1708 &#8211; &sect;0 open warfare on Jesus and his disciples.<br \/>\n        Sitting by the side of these Jewish leaders, in the synagogue seats of<br \/>\n        honor, were the official observers of Herod Antipas, who had been directed<br \/>\n        to ascertain the truth concerning the disturbing reports that an attempt<br \/>\n        had been made by the populace to proclaim Jesus the king of the Jews,<br \/>\n        over in the domains of his brother Philip.<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p>exquisite &lt; ex +quaerere (\ucd94\uc801\ud558\ub2e4, seek out), \ucd94\uc801\ud560 \uc815\ub3c4\ub85c \uc12c\uc138\ud558\uac8c \uc608\uc05c.<\/p>\n<p>vanguard &lt; avante + guard, \uc804\uc704 \ubd80\ub300.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1708 &#8211; &sect;1 Jesus comprehended that he faced the<br \/>\n        immediate declaration of avowed and open warfare by his increasing enemies,<br \/>\n        and he elected boldly to assume the offensive. At the feeding of the five<br \/>\n        thousand he had challenged their ideas of the material Messiah; now he<br \/>\n        chose again openly to attack their concept of the Jewish deliverer. This<br \/>\n        crisis, which began with the feeding of the five thousand, and which terminated<br \/>\n        with this Sabbath afternoon sermon, was the outward turning of the tide<br \/>\n        of popular fame and acclaim. Henceforth, the work of the kingdom was to<br \/>\n        be increasingly concerned with the more important task of winning lasting<br \/>\n        spiritual converts for the truly religious brotherhood of mankind. This<br \/>\n        sermon marks the crisis in the transition from the period of discussion,<br \/>\n        controversy, and decision to that of open warfare and final acceptance<br \/>\n        or final rejection.<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><a href=\"images\/h\/hol213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/h\/hol213.gif\" width=\"216\" height=\"144\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n      Remains of the Capernaum synagogue<\/p>\n<p>acclaim, \ud658\ud638, \uc9c0\uc9c0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1708 &#8211; &sect;2 The Master well knew that many of his<br \/>\n      followers were slowly but surely preparing their minds finally to reject<br \/>\n      him. He likewise knew that many of his disciples were slowly but certainly<br \/>\n      passing through that training of mind and that discipline of soul which<br \/>\n      would enable them to triumph over doubt and courageously to assert their<br \/>\n      full-fledged faith in the gospel of the kingdom. Jesus fully understood<br \/>\n      how men prepare themselves for the decisions of a crisis and the performance<br \/>\n      of sudden deeds of courageous choosing by the slow process of the reiterated<br \/>\n      choosing between the recurring situations of good and evil. He subjected<br \/>\n      his chosen messengers to repeated rehearsals in disappointment and provided<br \/>\n      them with frequent and testing opportunities for choosing between the<br \/>\n      right and the wrong way of meeting spiritual trials. He knew he could<br \/>\n      depend on his followers, when they met the final test, to make their vital<br \/>\n      decisions in accordance with prior and habitual mental attitudes and spirit<br \/>\n      reactions. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>full fledged, \uc798 \ubc1c\ub2ec\ub41c, \uc5b4\ub978 \uc0c8 \ud06c\uae30\uc758 \ub0a0\uac1c\ub97c \uac16\ucd98<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font size=\"5\">P.1708 &#8211; &sect;3 This crisis in Jesus&#8217; earth life began<br \/>\n        with the feeding of the five thousand and ended with this sermon in the<br \/>\n        synagogue; the crisis in the lives of the apostles began with this sermon<br \/>\n        in the synagogue and continued for a whole year, ending only with the<br \/>\n    Master&#8217;s trial and crucifixion.<\/font><\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1708 &#8211; &sect;4 As they sat there in the synagogue that<br \/>\n        afternoon before Jesus began to speak, there was just one great mystery,<br \/>\n        just one supreme question, in the minds of all. Both his friends and his<br \/>\n        foes pondered just one thought, and that was: &quot;Why did he himself<br \/>\n        so deliberately and effectively turn back the tide of popular enthusiasm?&quot;<br \/>\n        And it was immediately before and immediately after this sermon that the<br \/>\n        doubts and disappointments of his disgruntled adherents grew into unconscious<br \/>\n        opposition and eventually turned into actual hatred. It was after this<br \/>\n        sermon in the synagogue that Judas Iscariot entertained his first conscious<br \/>\n        thought of deserting. The feeding of the five thousand was the one event of his<br \/>\n      earth life which made the greatest appeal <br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1709 &#8211; &sect;0 to the Jewish concept of the expected<br \/>\n        Messiah. Jairus&#8217;<br \/>\n        only reply to all this pleading was: &quot;I have granted this request,<br \/>\n        and I will not violate my word.&quot;<br \/>\n        <\/font><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><font size=\"5\">2. THE EPOCHAL SERMON &#8211; P.1709<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1709 &#8211; &sect;2 Jesus introduced this sermon by reading<br \/>\n        from the law as found in Deuteronomy: &quot;But it shall come to pass,<br \/>\n        if this people will not hearken to the voice of God, that the curses of<br \/>\n        transgression shall surely overtake them. The Lord shall cause you to<br \/>\n        be smitten by your enemies; you shall be removed into all the kingdoms<br \/>\n        of the earth. And the Lord shall bring you and the king you have set up<br \/>\n        over you into the hands of a strange nation. You shall become an astonishment,<br \/>\n        a proverb, and a byword among all nations. Your sons and your daughters<br \/>\n        shall go into captivity. The strangers among you shall rise high in authority<br \/>\n        while you are brought very low. And these things shall be upon you and<br \/>\n        your seed forever because you would not hearken to the word of the Lord.<br \/>\n      <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">Therefore shall you serve your enemies who shall come against you. You<br \/>\n        shall endure hunger and thirst and wear this alien yoke of iron. The Lord<br \/>\n        shall bring against you a nation from afar, from the end of the earth,<br \/>\n        a nation whose tongue you shall not understand, a nation of fierce countenance,<br \/>\n        a nation which will have little regard for you. And they shall besiege<br \/>\n        you in all your towns until the high fortified walls wherein you have<br \/>\n        trusted come down; and all the land shall fall into their hands. And it came to pass<br \/>\n        that, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had<br \/>\n        commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and teachers laid<br \/>\n        hold of him, saying, `You shall surely die.&#8217; And all the people crowded<br \/>\n        around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. And when the princes of Judah<br \/>\n        heard these things, they sat in judgment on Jeremiah. That is what this people did<br \/>\n        to the Prophet Jeremiah when he obeyed the Lord&#8217;s command to warn his<br \/>\n        brethren of their impending political downfall. Today, I desire to ask<br \/>\n        you: What will the chief priests and religious leaders of this people<br \/>\n        do with the man who dares to warn them of the day of their spiritual doom?<br \/>\n        Will you also seek to put to death the teacher who dares to proclaim the<br \/>\n        word of the Lord, and who fears not to point out wherein you refuse to<br \/>\n        walk in the way of light which leads to the entrance to the kingdom of<br \/>\n        heaven?<br \/>\n    <\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">P.1710 &#8211; &sect;2 &quot;What is it you seek as evidence<br \/>\n        of my mission on earth? It was not to fill your souls with the word<br \/>\n        of life, but only that you might fill the belly with the bread of ease.<br \/>\n        And long have you been taught that the Messiah, when he should come, would<br \/>\n        work those wonders which would make life pleasant and easy for all the<br \/>\n        chosen people. It is not strange, then, that you who have been thus taught<br \/>\n        should long for the loaves and the fishes. But I declare to you that such<br \/>\n        is not the mission of the Son of Man. It was their belief that &quot;it<br \/>\n      is better to die than to transgress the commandments of the elders.&quot; <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"5\">The spies asked this question because it had been reported that Jesus<br \/>\n        had said, &quot;Salvation is a matter of clean hearts rather than of clean<br \/>\n        hands.&quot; But such beliefs, when they once become a part of one&#8217;s religion,<br \/>\n        are hard to get away from. Even many years after this day the Apostle<br \/>\n        Peter was still held in the bondage of fear to many of these traditions<br \/>\n        about things clean and unclean, only being finally delivered by experiencing<br \/>\n        an extraordinary and vivid dream. Can you cast out devils?&quot; And when the<br \/>\n        Master looked upon the youth, he was moved with compassion and, beckoning<br \/>\n        for the lad to come to him, took him by the hand and said: &quot;You know<br \/>\n        who I am; come out of him; and I charge one of your loyal fellows to see<br \/>\n        that you do not return.&quot; And immediately the lad was normal and in<br \/>\n        his right mind.
